STEP ONTO CANNINGTON VIADUCT MORE THAN 60 YEARS AFTER TRAINS LAST RAN

Join us for a unique weekend celebrating one of Britain’s most remarkable hidden railway landmarks. Walk across Cannington Viaduct on a guided visit or enjoy the atmosphere at our Uplyme Village Hall event hub, where a specially produced film, displays, refreshments and railway enthusiasts will bring back its remarkable story.

Cannington Viaduct Revisited has been developed in partnership between For the Love of a Railway, the National Highways Historical Railways Estate, Axminster Town Council, Uplyme Parish Council, the South Western Railway and the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership. It has been made possible through the kind permission of Shapwick Grange Farm and the enthusiastic input of a team of volunteers.

Admission is free, but places on both the guided viaduct walks and village hall experience must be booked in advance. Donations on the day to help us cover the costs and to further promote local railway heritage will be much appreciated.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

• Guided viaduct walks last around two hours and involve a two-mile return walk over uneven ground
• Access to the viaduct requires climbing a moderately steep bank at the site
• Suitable rough terrain footwear is essential
• Guided groups will be limited to 30 people
• Advance booking is essential
• No dogs on the walk please

GUIDED VIADUCT WALK
Guided walks leave Uplyme Village Hall at timed intervals throughout both days, with groups limited to 30 people to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Visitors will walk about a mile each way along  country lanes and tracks and will climb a moderately steep bank onto the viaduct. Reasonable fitness and suitable footwear are essential. A drinks and snacks vendor will be located at the viaduct. Your  Guided Viaduct Walk ticket also entitled you to enjoy the Village Hall Heritage Experience. 

VILLAGE HALL HERITAGE EXPERIENCE
Whether or not you make the walk, Uplyme Village Hall will be at the heart of the weekend. Enjoy the premiere of a specially produced short film telling the remarkable story of Cannington Viaduct through breathtaking drone footage, rare archive photographs and personal memories from people who travelled the line before it closed in 1965. Browse railway displays, meet local railway enthusiasts, share memories and enjoy the atmosphere throughout the day. If technology allows, we also hope to include occasional live pictures from the viaduct. Hot and cold drinks, homemade cakes and light refreshments will be available to purchase throughout both days.
