Following the first seminar selling out in just two days, we’ve added a second date for our Masonry Conservation in Scotland CPD seminar.
Friday CPD seminar at Orwell Farm (Kinross)
09:30–14:00 (09:15 for registration and coffee)
£95 + VAT per person
Maximum 8 participants
Refreshments and lunch included
Join Frew Conservation for a focused CPD seminar exploring the conservation and repair of traditional masonry in Scotland.
The seminar is aimed principally at architects and building surveyors, and will also be relevant to structural engineers, planners, building standards professionals, contractors and others involved in the repair, alteration or conservation of traditional buildings.
The seminar will be split into two sessions, with plenty of opportunity for discussion and questions throughout.
Session 1 — Reading the Wall
Understanding Stonework, Construction, Wall Finishes & Decay
This session will look at how traditional masonry buildings are constructed, how stonework weathers and deteriorates, and how to recognise the causes of common defects.
Topics will include traditional wall construction and finishes, stone types, moisture movement, decay mechanisms, inappropriate repairs and the importance of accurate diagnosis before specifying work.
Session 2 — Repairing the Wall
Lime Mortars & External Coatings
The second session will focus on appropriate repair materials and finishes for traditional masonry.
We will consider lime mortar selection, compatibility, pointing and repair techniques, harling and render systems, limewash and other external coatings, together with common specification and workmanship failures.
Speaker: Craig Frew MSc IHBC
Craig is the founder and Director of Frew Conservation and has over 25 years’ experience in building conservation, with particular expertise in traditional masonry, lime mortars and external lime coatings. He is a Full Member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) and, prior to founding Frew Conservation in 2012, held senior technical and conservation roles with the Scottish Lime Centre Trust, Dundee City Council and within the stonemasonry sector.
Format
The seminar is intentionally limited to 8 participants, allowing for a more informal and practical discussion than a conventional lecture-style CPD session.
Questions are encouraged throughout, with time for wider discussion after both sessions.
Coffee and refreshments will be available on arrival and morning break with lunch included following the seminar.
