An Extended Learning Workshop

Repairing the Parent-Child
Relationship in Recovery

With Samantha Duggan, PhD

About the workshop

Many people in recovery carry unresolved pain, regret, or longing in relation to their children, or their own parents. We often know something was damaged, but we are unsure how to approach repair without causing further harm.

This three-hour workshop offers a psychologically grounded and gently reflective space to explore the questions that often go unspoken: what actually went wrong, why well-intentioned repair efforts sometimes cause more pain rather than healing, and what meaningful repair can look like now, especially when children are adults.

Drawing on clear psychological frameworks and a light spiritual framing, the workshop combines short teaching segments with guided reflection and written exercises. Sharing is always optional. The workshop is designed to be safe and accessible whether or not you identify with addiction language.

Participants leave with greater clarity, reduced self-blame, and a steadier internal footing from which to relate, whether or not external repair is possible.

What we'll explore together

  • Understand what actually went wrong in the parent-child relationship, and why
  • Explore why apologies and "amends" sometimes cause more pain rather than healing
  • Distinguish between relief, reconciliation, and genuine repair
  • Work with shame and responsibility without collapsing into self-blame
  • Clarify what can be repaired, and what may need to be grieved or accepted
