Happy Retreat will host Michael Murphy on Sunday, February 9th at 2 pm.
Dr. Michael Murphy holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Norfolk State University, a Master's Degree in Guitar Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he studied with John Patykula, and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Guitar Performance from Shenandoah University's Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Glenn Caluda. He was a founding member of the Nuevo Guitar Trio which performed in the Mid-Atlantic region. Some of their appearances included concerts for National Public Radio, the Baltimore Guitar Society, and the Richmond Guitar Society. He is a founding member of the Cavalier Consort, and he has performed with the Norfolk Chamber Consort, Capriole, the Governor's Music of Colonial Williamsburg, Fanfare Barok, and Winchester Baroque. The Cavalier Consort recorded a CD, Music’s Magic Art, which is available through the group’s Facebook page. He has performed for various guitar societies, music festivals, and performing arts organizations in the eastern United States, making numerous appearances in performances and interviews on radio and television. He has taught guitar for over twenty years in a variety of settings, both private lessons and in the classroom. He has taught for Norfolk Public School's Governor's Magnet School of the Arts, Tidewater Community College, Virginia Union University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Chowan College, Shenandoah University, and Old Dominion University where he founded their guitar program. In 2011 Dr. Murphy completed his transcriptions of the works of seventeenth-century French guitar composer Henri Grenerin. It is now available through Clear Note Publications. Dr. Murphy now teaches guitar for Loudoun County Public Schools in Virginia, and he is very proud to be on the faculty of Briar Woods High School.
