South Georgia Museum is where history, nature and adventure converge!

The South Georgia Museum and its collections are owned by the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands and operated on its behalf by the South Georgia Heritage Trust. The collections span the breadth of South Georgia’s history, including Natural History, Social History, Exploration and Expeditions, Military and Maritime themes. Although it is over 800 miles from its closest landmass, South Georgia is still visited annually by around 18,000 visitors.

South Georgia, a sub-Antarctic island, is a natural paradise rich in cultural heritage. Our mission is to protect South Georgia’s environment and preserve its history. We collaborate with all who wish to safeguard the island’s natural and cultural heritage for future generations, aiming to rectify past environmental damage.

Helen Balfour is Assistant Curator for South Georgia Museum.

Helen was brought up in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. She travels from 60° North to almost 60° South to work in South Georgia. Following in both her grandfathers’ footsteps, as they each travelled to South Georgia for employment in the island’s whaling industry in the 1950s. Helen studied her honours and master’s degree in Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen.
