FSLS Trip to Dunster Castle (National Trust)
Dunster Castle has sat at its commanding location since the Middle Ages: a perfect site for a castle, both visually impressive and easily defended. During the 1,000 years of its history, it has been transformed through the ages from a fortress to a family home. From a collection of painted leather hangings, the only one of its kind in the UK, to a working watermill, Dunster has plenty to see and enjoy.
The impressive Grand Staircase was built in 1680, with each panel carved from a single piece of elm. The intricate carvings depict a fox and stag hunt, some Charles II shillings, and a trophy of arms which commemorate Col Francis Luttrell's' military career. Famous for spectacular views over the Somerset countryside and Bristol Channel, the garden at Dunster Castle will take you on a journey around the world. Known for its diversity of plants and features, the garden encompasses four different microclimates for you to experience, with subtropical, Mediterranean and temperate plants beside the river, in the herbaceous borders and on the terraces.
A word of warning Dunster Castle is set on a hill therefore a visit involves climbing some steep inclines and going up and down a lot of stairs. Also to reach the castle from the coach park involves a five-minute walk through the charming Dunster village. The coach journey will take about two hours but we will take a comfort stop along the way. Arriving at about 11am you will have the opportunity to explore the castle and gardens. There are no guided tours but the guides in each room are most knowledgeable and happy to answer all your questions. Food and drink are available at the castle or in the many tea shops in Dunster village.
