Frome Big Bat Count August 2026

Tue 4 Aug 2026 8:30 PM - 10:15 PM BST

We are seeking volunteers of all ages to take part again in a community bat count, in various locations across the town.

Our partners at Somerset Bat Group will be on hand to lend out equipment and show us how to use it, so no prior experience is necessary: just book your free ticket for one of the locations listed below.

On the day we will meet at Frome Town Hall at 8 PM for a briefing. Afterward, you'll travel to your chosen location in a team of up to 6, where the count will begin at 8:45 PM and last for one hour. Once finished, you and your team will return to the Town Hall for a debrief and to return the equipment. When selecting your bat count location, please ensure you can get there and back. Be prepared for a moderate amount of walking during the event, and car access or share will be required to get to some of the locations on time.

For any questions about the event, please contact Jo Morris jmorris@frometowncouncil.gov.uk

Cancellations: If you have booked a ticket and are no longer able to attend, please use the 'Manage Tickets' link on the right or contact Frome Town Council on 01373 465 757.

For those that have done Big Bat Counts before, alongside the usual bat group equipment, this time the Bat Group will offer the option to use a Ultrasound microphone with your own phone as a bat detector. If you would like to try this, then please download an app to your phone in advance of the Big Bat Count.
