Description
Frome's walking festival is back, after a year away! Join us on any of our multiple walks; from trees to Saxons to rivers to pubs to churches, there's a walk for anyone and everyone.

All walks start from the Cheese & Grain unless otherwise stated. Walking times are estimated, so please allow for a later finish.
Friday 12th November
Unexpected Health Walk (South Frome) – 10.30am - 12pm - starts at Culver Co-op
A Health Walk is a walk done on a regular basis for well-being. This walk is a 2-mile, medium difficulty walk along the river and out into the countryside.
Saturday 13th November
Saxon Kings Way – 9.30am - 4pm
Led by Les Stather, this linear walk links two Anglo-Saxon kings; King Eadred, King of England and his nephew King Edgar, King of England and their links to Frome and Bath. The route links Mendip Way East with the Cotswold Way. The walk is 14 miles long, but walkers can drop out along the way, as the route passes multiple bus stops.
A-Z of Frome – 10am - 11.30am
Take a journey through Frome to discover some significant and little-known aspects of its rich and varied past. From buildings and streets to people and events, the walk highlights fascinating aspects of the town’s history, including stories of UFO sightings, a world famous Roman coin hoard, local inns and the search for underground tunnels.
Orchardleigh – 11am - 3pm
A circular walk following riverside and field paths into the Orchardleigh estate, where it follows a muddy lakeside path and then tarmac driveway, returning to Frome via Spring Gardens and Cooper Hall. Led by Rich Ackroyd, this walk is approximately 7 miles.
Foul Frome - 12.30pm - 2pm
This walk is an eye-opening and entertaining ninety-minute walk in the footsteps of the town’s most notorious rogues, rebels and renegades. Discover how Frome became embroiled in the Monmouth Rebellion, see the location of a 19th century murder and find out the reason behind the town’s pitched battle with the Salvation Army, plus much more!
Saxon Frome - 1.pm - 2.30pm
Frome was founded in 685CE, and later became an important town in Saxon Wessex. Barely any Saxon remains can now be seen but the shape of the town centre today is rooted in those early years of the settlement. This guided walk will explain what we know of Saxon Frome from its founding, through the rule of the Wessex kings including Alfred, Athelstan and Eadred, to the coming of the Normans. Led by Lisa Kenwright.
Frome Heritage Tree Walk - 2.pm - 3.30pm
Join local author and ancient tree specialist Julian Hight on a walk to see some of Frome’s most majestic trees and hear about their history, lore and descendants. The easy walk will include Millennium Green and Rodden Meadow and take around an hour and a half. Led by Julian Hight.
Historic Inns of Frome - 3pm - 4.30pm
This walk will take in the sites of a dozen pubs and inns to give their histories and place them in their social context. Learn about the town’s very own breweries, bankrupt landlords, an historic pub-crawl, rioting and the many various nefarious activities which took place. Based on the best-selling book ‘Historic Inns of Frome’. The walk is led by author David Lassman.
Sunday 14th November
Religious Buildings (East) - 9am - 10am
When the Book of Common Prayer was imposed on the nation in 1662, Non-conformity flourished in Frome and in the 19th century the Anglican congregation was outnumbered by Non Conformists to a factor of 4 to 1. The walk explore religious buildings in the east section of town for the most part and, apart from Portway Methodist Church, is accessible (with one diversion) but steep in places.
Heart of Frome - 9.20am - 10am
A family-friendly guided
history walk through the town centre with stories about the town's past to enthral
adults and children alike. Suitable for all ages but aimed at the level of age
7+, approx 40 mins, starting at the Cheese & Grain, ending at St John's
churchyard.
Buggy Walk - 9.45am - 10.45am
A special buggy walk for those who want to socialise and enjoy being outside. A circular walk, approximately two miles at a moderate pace.
Frome At War - 12pm - 2pm
Frome at War discovers the contribution Frome and its people made during the two World Wars as well as stories about evacuees, Dunkirk survivors, American GIs and more. Follow in Field-Marshall Montgomery’s footsteps, locate war graves of many who gave their lives, as well as Frome’s very own VC holder, and discover both the story behind Frome’s Official War Memorial and the night the town was bombed by the German Luftwaffe.
Health & Rivers Walk - 1.30pm - 2.30pm
A pleasant walk on the paths around Frome, following and taking in the river views along the way. Lasting around an hour.

Sense of Place 1.45pm - 3.15pm
A guided walk around the ancient market town of Frome, explaining the history and folklore behind some of the local place names. Taking in the older parts of Frome this walk explores the origins, real and imagined, of the names of places, streets and pubs and what they tell us about the society and culture of the town over its long history. Led by Frome Town Guide Lisa Kenwright.
