UNIVERSITY OF THE STREETS: Belfast workshop
UNIVERSITY OF THE STREETS
Joan Littlewood, Fun Palaces and culture as a political act
Join Fun Palaces Makers and team for an afternoon of conversation, participation and shared thinking over a drink at the Sunflower Pub.
This is part talk, part conversation, part collective experiment. Inspired by Joan Littlewood and Cedric Price's original Fun Palace idea, we'll dig into how theatre, music, pubs, storytelling, craft and shared cultural acts become forms of participation, visibility and collective life - and why those ideas feel more urgent now than they did sixty years ago.
You'll find out more about Joan Littlewood, Cedric Price and the original Fun Palace project. Then we'll think together about culture beyond institutions - who it belongs to, who gets to make it, and what happens when we stop waiting for permission - and what a contemporary "University of the Streets" might look like in Belfast today.
This one's open to anyone curious about culture, participation, public life and collective creativity.
Access
The Sunflower's function room is up a flight of stairs and there is no lift, so this venue is not wheelchair accessible and won't work for everyone with mobility needs. We're sorry that's the case here. If you have any access requirements at all, get in touch before you travel and we'll do everything we can to help, or talk through other ways to be part of what we're doing in Belfast: hello@funpalaces.co.uk
