some voices don't need translation.
There is a voice that has crossed every border, every language and every belief. It belongs to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the master of qawwali and the devotional music of the Sufis. Born in Pakistan in 1948 he carried this centuries-old tradition from the shrines of Punjab to stages around the world and left us in 1997 at just 48.
Almost thirty years later his voice has not faded. It is still studied, celebrated and rediscovered by new generations and previously unheard recordings are still coming to light. Across the world people continue to turn to it to rest, to grieve and to come home.
Re-imagining Nusrat is an intimate listening evening devoted to his recorded works. Not a concert and not a performance but a slow and carefully curated journey for a small circle of listeners. In low light and in a room built for deep listening you are invited to sit, lie down, close your eyes and feel.
The evening unfolds through three dimensions of his voice:
the ambient: his voice wrapped in soft atmospheric soundscapes to settle in.
the crossing: the moments his voice met Western artists and travelled far beyond Pakistan.
the devotional: one long traditional qawwali played in full and in near darkness.
Between the pieces a few quiet words about where the music comes from and what it carries. Then silence and the space to stay a little longer.
Inspired by the Sufi tradition of listening as a spiritual act this is an evening for anyone who longs for stillness. For those who grew up with his voice and for those about to hear it for the first time.
simply let it hold you.
