Far right ecologies: what challenges for sustainability science? Pathways Deep Dive

As far-right movements gain influence across the Global North and South, their approach to climate and environmental issues has become more complex and more strategically effective. Contrary to the assumption that these movements are simply anti-environment and dismissive of ecological issues, they have developed varied ecological standpoints depending on historical, economic and socio-political contexts.
For the sustainability science community, the growing influence of far-right ecologisms raises urgent questions. As climate issues become increasingly politicized within regressive agendas, scientists face mounting pressures: how to effectively communicate research in the face of coordinated disinformation campaigns; how to maintain international collaboration amid ideological hostility; and how to protect the funding and institutional support critical for future research and climate action.
This Forum, inscribed in the wider Pathways Deep Dive series “Ecological Crises and Political Tensions”, will critically examine the discourses and practices employed by far-right movements to co-opt, distort, or weaponize ecological issues. Among the many questions tackled in this webinar, we will ask:
What are the contradictions and complexities of far right discourses on climate change, and what are its effects?
How does the rising influence of far right discourses affect the work and research practices for the sustainability science community?
What strategies can researchers employ to navigate, resist, and deconstruct these narratives?
