Creating a genuine credible alternative to our dysfunctional and regressive food system is a long term objective with many complex challenges to overcome. Among these is that popular and policy discourse on the subject is currently siloed into a series of disconnected debates, stymieing the strategic thinking and partnerships needed for progress. For example:

  • The connection between health, climate and food is dominated by an individualist framing that emphasises consumer choice as the route to change
  • While food waste and food poverty are subjects of public concern, their common roots are obscured, and systemic solutions ignored in favour of short term voluntary & philanthropic mitigation
  • Visions of the future food are dominated by machine-led industrialised conceptions, which ignore the value of tradition, community and heritage, and how historic injustices remain embedded in our current systems

To help overcome these barriers, and start the process of creating a unified vision of a healthy, just, and sustainable food system, Land Workers Alliance, Future Narratives and Stir to Action have initiated the ‘Reframing Food Futures’ project, which will be presented publicly for the first time at this online summit.

The event will include presentation of the outcomes from an in-person analysis and mapping workshop being held on 15th September in Bristol, as well interactive exercises and discussion on different aspects of narrative change in food systems. Speakers will include:

  • Ian Byrne MP on the Right to Food campaign
  • Dr Kai Heron, Lancaster University on Agroecology & Regenerative Farming
  • Jo Kamal, Land Workers Alliance on Food Sovereignty in the UK
  • Dr Nicola Scott, Stir to Action on diversifying food production
