Pop Up - Let People Be Responsible - Free One Hour Session

Thu Jun 18, 2026 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM EDT Online, Zoom

"Let people be responsible" is a simple sounding principle yet carries great implications for working with groups. Important to our philosophy of facilitation, letting people be responsible underpins both Future Search and the broader Don't Just Do Something, Stand There approach.

“Let people be responsible” reminds us of the tendency of leaders, consultants, facilitators, and professionals to assume responsibility for outcomes that belong to other people. There are a lot of ways for that to show up. The principle challenges us to reflect on what we can do in the preparation and facilitation of meetings to genuinely enable people to take responsibility for their own work and future.

Whole System Development, our overarching orientation, understands that groups, in order to achieve their purpose, must develop capacity over time. People grow in capability when they are allowed to carry responsibility for their own choices, relationships, and actions (as well as accommodating differences, but that is another pop up!). They are denied this when responsibility is taken from them.

This pop-up will allow you to reflect on your own practice and how we can, even for the best of motives, get in the way of groups taking responsibility. The Pop Up will also unpack some practical behaviours for leaders and facilitators to ensure that groups get to own their stuff, do the work, and grow their capacity.

When you as leader or facilitator master this practice you can free yourself from feeling you have to ensure everyone is happy, that you have to solve the groups difficulties, or for making everyone there participate in any given way.

Join us for our latest in the pop up series. Its free to attend.

While this event is not being charged - we appreciate any donations to help us continue our work. Future Search Network has non profit status and all work is voluntary. All donations are used to support the spread of the work!
