Join FWAG SW and the winners of the 2025 Somerset Otter Award, Crowcombe Estate, as we take a guided tour of the farm and celebrate their success.

Crowcombe Estate extends to 400 ha of in-bye land alongside moorland and SSSI on the Quantock Hills. Approximately one third of the farm is let for cropping, whilst another third is woodland and the remainder is farmed in-hand.

Livestock numbers are growing and include a herd of Red Ruby Devon cattle and flock of North Country Mule sheep as well as around 20 native breed pigs. Livestock on the farm are both a management tool for habitats as well as a profitable enterprise, supplying meat for local customers.

In recent times they have focused on managing the encroachment of bracken and rhododendron both with a remote controlled flail and grazing livestock. The woodland is being managed to provide a diverse age structure both for economic and wildlife benefits and there are plans to establish wood pasture.

The farm walk will include discussions on;

  • Use of machinery and livestock to manage bracken and rhododendron.
  • Reinstatement and management of banks & hedges.
  • Future woodland management plans.

We’ll be joined by experienced FWAG advisers who are ready to answer your questions
