Join Pasture for Life & FWAG SouthWest at Park Farm (Lydiard Turkeys) for a morning exploring soil management in a changing climate and practical tips for subsoiler use, with Mel Holloway.

About the host farm

The Farm is home to approximately 100 mixed breed beef cattle, 50 rare breed Oxford Down sheep, an expanding herd of Oxford Sandy & Black pigs and for 6 months of the year 500 free range Bronze turkeys for Christmas. The farm's beef is certified with Pasture for Life  as being 100% grass fed. The Oxford Down sheep are kept to produce Lamb, Hogget, Mutton, Wool and breeding stock. Farmers Chris and Lyndsay are previous winners of FWAG's Gloucestershire Silver Pintail Award and regional Barn Owl Award for their nature-friendly methods of farming.

The morning includes
Arrive from 9:45am for locally sourced refreshments and a chance to catch up with others in the catchment. A representative of Thames Water will then introduce the Thames Water Catchment Fund.

Mel Holloway will give a presentation on Building Resilient and Healthy Soils for a Changing Climate: practical considerations for every farm.

This will cover:

  • Consequences of weather extremes
  • The three pillars of soil health: physical properties, biological activity & chemical properties
  • What good soil health really means
  • How to practically measure the most important soil health metrics
  • What to do when things go wrong
  • Subsoiling – why, when & how to get it right

We will then head out on a farm walk to see the subsoiler in action.

Lunch will be served around 1pm and is free of charge.

FWAG SouthWest staff will be available to discuss funding options on your farm.

Who it is for: Farmers and land managers in the Thames Water area and those interested in sustainable soil management.

Please note: The farm walk takes place outdoors on farmland, so please come dressed for the weather with suitable footwear. Ground can be uneven underfoot.

Location: Meet at What3Words location ///riders.intruded.purse or search 'Lydiard Turkeys' in Google maps.
