About this webinar
This talk will explore the secondary use of health data in the AI era, focusing on the paradox facing modern healthcare: vast volumes of routinely collected data exist, yet actionable insights remain difficult to generate due to technical fragmentation and privacy constraints. The presentation will examine how real‑world data can meaningfully complement randomised controlled trials and what this means for the future of clinical research. The talk will discuss challenges, opportunities and emerging approaches to using health data responsibly to support research and discovery.
About Speaker
Pedro Alves obtained his BSc-MSc in Bioengineering (Molecular Biotechnology), in 2018, from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), during which he undertook a 5-month research traineeship at Imperial College London. Pedro went on to complete a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, conducted at i3S Porto (2018-2024), where his research centred on the development of novel biomaterials for fighting infection in chronic skin wounds. He has co-authored 8 international scientific publications.
In 2024, Pedro transitioned to industry as an R&D Specialist at Promptly Health, where he contributes to the identification and preparation of competitive grant applications aligned with the product roadmap, and he's involved in defining the company's Intellectual Property strategy.
