They Are, I Am, Feeding You Myself
A debut solo exhibition by Whorlasmz
Curated by Ishmael Claxton

They are, I am, feeding you myself brings together a new body of work rooted in self-portraiture, Blackness and queerness. Taking its title from the first work in the exhibition, the artist presents a figure with multiple heads and faces joined to one body, bringing together the experiences, identities and histories that shape an individual. Across painting and drawing, Black queer figures become reflections of different selves, with the body, hair, sexuality and gender acting as markers of time and personal change. Developed through photography, imagination, journaling and drawing, the work asks what it means to see yourself represented and to create the versions of yourself that may not otherwise exist. After three years living in Berlin, the artist returns to these questions through a practice that is playful, intimate and unapologetically visible.
