Join Galway Civic Trust guide Ronan Harvey for a fascinating Heritage Week tour exploring Galway’s rich military heritage through a visit to St. Patrick’s Garrison Church and the Renmore Military Museum at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa (Renmore Barracks).

The tour begins at St. Patrick’s Garrison Church, the spiritual home of the 1st Infantry Battalion of the Irish Defence Forces. This impressive church contains beautiful stained-glass windows, military memorials, regimental standards and many reminders of its long association with generations of Irish soldiers and their families.

Visitors will then be guided to the Military Museum at Renmore Barracks, where a remarkable collection of uniforms, medals, weapons, photographs and personal artefacts helps tell the story of Ireland’s military history. The museum features displays relating to the Connaught Rangers, the Defence Forces and Ireland’s extensive peacekeeping missions across the globe.

A special section of the museum is dedicated to Liam Mellows, the revolutionary leader after whom the barracks was renamed in 1952, offering further insight into one of Galway’s most significant historical figures.

This unique tour provides an opportunity to discover the people, events and traditions that have shaped Galway’s military past and Ireland’s wider story.
