Join Galway Civic Trust guides Ronan and Carol for a fascinating Heritage Week visit to the Zoology and Geology Museums at the University of Galway.

Hidden within the Martin Ryan Building, the Zoology Museum is home to an extraordinary collection of more than 500 specimens from around the world. Highlights include rare specimens associated with Charles Darwin’s voyage aboard HMS Beagle and the renowned Blaschka Collection — a remarkable series of delicate glass models of marine creatures that combine scientific accuracy with artistic craftsmanship.

Visitors will also enjoy an opportunity to encounter a variety of live animals, including stick insects, scorpions, tarantulas, lizards and other fascinating creatures. These interactive displays offer a unique insight into animal behaviour, habitats and adaptations, making the visit particularly popular with families and young explorers.

The tour also includes a visit to the neighbouring Geology Museum, where visitors can discover an impressive collection of minerals, rocks and fossils from Ireland and across the globe. The exhibits help tell the story of our planet’s formation and the geological forces that continue to shape the world around us.

We will meet beneath the historic Quadrangle Archway before taking a short walk to the museums.

Places are limited to 40 participants and booking is essential.

Suitable for all ages, this special Heritage Week event offers a rare opportunity to explore two of the University of Galway’s hidden treasures and discover the wonders of the natural world.
