Throwing Wide course, current students only
This 4-hour weekend course focuses on throwing wider forms on the wheel, including plates, bowls, and platters, focusing on control, compression, and confidence. we will be working on taking the clay outwards rather than upwards, while maintaining a well-compressed, even base to support larger forms.
Through demonstrations and guided practice, you’ll revisit key skills such as securely fixing batts to the wheel and spiral wedging to prepare larger amounts of clay effectively. These reminders are especially useful when working with wider forms, where good preparation plays a crucial role in success.
Forms made during the session may include wide bowls, plates, and platters, depending on your interests and experience. Pieces will be slow dried over several weeks to reduce the risk of cracking or warping as best as possible. Coloured slip will be available in future sessions for those who would like to return and sgraffito their work, large flat surfaces work well for this technique. These pieces are able to be glazed in the studio in future sessions or you can collect for pick up to glaze at home and bring back for firing.
Please note that you will only be keeping 4x pieces for this session please remember that this is practice and not about keeping all of your pieces made.
This is a relaxed weekend session designed to give you time to practise, experiment, and build confidence at your own pace.
Please note: bring lunch with you, as the session runs for four hours.
