Fern Hickson: We need to talk about gender identity.

Thu 16 Oct 2025 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM NZDT Online, Zoom

New Zealand schools are self-managing , run by an elected board of parents, many of whom will be faced with a steep learning curve when they are asked to make decisions about students with a 'gender identity', a concept they may know little about.

In this presentation, Fern Hickson, a retired registered teacher, will explain the basics of gender identity and why we need to talk about it. She will discuss why 'gender identity' is not a new human right, nor Gay rights 2.0, and why schools must maintain a neutral space, free from ideology, in which all children can flourish.

Fern has over 30 years' experience in teaching in primary and secondary schools and is a member of Resist Gender Education, an alliance of educators and parents that advocates for scientifically factual relationships and sexuality education, including teaching the most basic fact: that humans cannot change sex.

There will be a Q&A session at the end.
