Anti-fascist Theatre of the Oppressed workshop and performance
Brazilian Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner, Geo Britto will lead a tree day Theatre of the Oppressed workshop at Pelican House in London. This will culminate in a performance at the International Marxist conference Historical Materialism at SOAS, University of London.(historicalmaterialism.org/) event is taking place, with participants from all over the world.
The Theatre of the Oppressed is the dramatisation of class struggle. It reveals exploitation, ideological contradictions and points to possibilities for liberation arising from organised collective action.
In this workshop, you will become familiar with new games and techniques based on the work carried out by the People’s Theatre School (ETP), Brazil with favela inhabitants and grassroots movements in Rio de Janeiro.
We will work with Brecht’s & Boal’s techniques, which we use in our anti-fascist, anti-imperialist struggle. This workshop brings our anti-fascist principles and imangination to life. It will take place on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of November 2026 from 10 am to 5 pm and final Performance of the play on 4 November at 5.30 pm at Brunei Gallery, BG01 SOAS University
40 places will be allocated according to the participants’ political and social circumstances:
- 10 free places,
- 10 at £50,
- 10 at £100 and
- 10 at £150.

Geo Britto – Founder and member of the Coordinating Council of the Popular Theatre School (ETP). He has worked with the Theatre of the Oppressed for 35 years, 20 of them with Augusto Boal. He has given lectures, workshops and theatrical presentations in Palestine, Bolivia, Mozambique, Egypt, India, South Africa, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Guatemala, Croatia, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Germany, England, Sweden, Canada and the United States. He holds a Master’s degree in Arts from UFF, is pursuing a PhD in Theatre at USP and is the father of twins. He launched the book Augusto Boal e a Formação do Teatro do Oprimido (Augusto Boal and the Making of the Theatre of the Oppressed), which addresses the materialist and dialectical legacies of how Boal arrived at the Theatre of the Oppressed. Soon the book will be release in english through Pluto Press.
