Guided Tour of the Antikensammlung in the Altes Museum

Sat 7 Nov 2026 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Altes Museum, 10178

After the success of Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey", archeologist and Oxon alumnus Dr. Hildegard Wiegel contrasts Hollywood's depiction of the ancient Greek world and its religious beliefs with what we know from scientific research. A quick taster: Despite Elizabeth Taylor's portrayal, Cleopatra was by no means an overly made-up femme fatale, while the fate of Odysseus was much more determined by women (than Mr. Nolan imagined) and what does today's student drama have to do with ancient Greek practice....?

An independent scholar currently based in Berlin, Hildegard studied history of art, classical archeology, and philosophy in Erlangen, as well as literae humaniores at Oxford and then went on to complete her studies in art history and classical archeology at the FU Berlin. Following her Magister, she won a scholarship from the British Academy to return to Oxford, where she gained her Master of Studies and Doctor of Philosophy at Wolfson. Alongside several years of research in Marbach, Paris, and Weimar, Hildegard  has worked on several exhibitions in Germany and Italy. In 2009, she was elected as a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
