A Guided Tour of the Trees of Montpelier Gardens
A Guided Tour of the Trees of Montpelier Gardens
Need help?
Montpellier Gardens were created as a pleasure garden to enhance the Regency development of Cheltenham as a spa town. With its long avenues of lime, cherry, and chestnut trees as well as playing host to many native and exotic tree species in “the arboretum” located in the northern corner of the park.
We shall be guided around by Christopher Chavasse, Cheltenham Borough Council’s senior Tree Officer. Our walk will cover much of the gardens and Chris will talk about the species of trees in the park their management, problems and opportunities. With his extensive knowledge, he will also explain how to identify some tree species.
This is very much intended to be an informal and interactive visit and we would therefore encourage anyone to contribute their knowledge and perspectives about the history of these important and formal pleasure gardens.
