HMP Shepton Mallet, sometimes known as Cornhill, is a former prison located in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England. When it closed in 2013, it was the United Kingdom's oldest operating prison. Before its closure Shepton Mallet was a category C lifer prison holding 189 prisoners.
The Prison was opened before 1625, it was expanded in 1790s and further building work was undertaken in 1820s, 1830s and the number of cells was expanded in 1843 by added a second storey to each wing. In 1904 the building was damaged by a fire and in 1930 the number of inmates had fallen so was closed.
Between 1939-1966 it was used as a military prison during this time American forces added an execution block to hang condemned prisoners.
In 1966 it was returned to civilian use and decommissioned in 2013.
