Monmouth Shire Hall was built in 1724 and was formerly the centre for the assize courts and quarter sessions for Monmouthshire, the building was also used as a market place. In 1839–40, the court was the location of the trial of the Chartist leader John Frost and others for high treason for their part in the Newport Rising.
The magistrates' court at Shire Hall, Monmouth, closed in 1997, and the county court closed in 2002 as most functions had been moved to the shire hall in Newport. Monmouthshire County Council managed to secure funding and started refurbishment in 2008, and it reopen to the public in 2010.
