Standing proudly on the High Street, Cowbridge Town Hall may look like an elegant Georgian civic building… but behind its stone façade lies a long intriguing past.

Long before it became the heart of town life, this building was a House of Correction.

🔐 A Prison with Centuries of Confinement

The site has been associated with imprisonment since at least 1576, when legislation formally recognised a House of Correction in Cowbridge. In 1806, a new purpose-built prison was constructed here — and remarkably, much of it still survives today.

Within these walls:

• Prisoners were confined in narrow stone cells
  
  

• Offences ranged from vagrancy and drunkenness to more serious crimes
  
  

• Records show overcrowding, hardship, and harsh conditions
  
  

Even now, six original prison cells remain intact, their heavy doors and thick walls standing as silent witnesses to centuries of human despair.

🏛️ From Iron Bars to Council Chambers

When the prison closed in 1829, the building was transformed into the Town Hall we see today. By 1830, civic leaders were meeting in rooms that once held inmates.

But can a building ever truly shed its past?
