Make your own: Clay Tile Workshop

Sat 29 Mar 2025 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM Story Garden, NW1 1DF

Join us at the Story Garden for a hands-on clay workshop learning to make your very own set of six ceramic tiles. Led by experienced cermaicist and maker Nadire, you will be able to design and create your own theme using found natural items in the garden or existing stencils and tools. Explore three printmaking techniques on clay (imprinting, sgraffito and stencil printing) and create six tiles that can be used to create a splashback, as coasters or for decoration in your home. Your tiles will be ready to collect 3-4 weeks from the date of workshop from the Story Garden.

What to bring

  • The workshop is held in a classroom space in a community garden but it will take place partially outside if the weather allows, so we recommend bringing layers and clothes to keep you warm and dry.
  • Working with clay is messy! Wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting clay on and if your hair is long, we recommend tying it back.
  • We recommend bringing a water bottle which we can refill on site.
  • We'll provide all the materials you need on the day to try out the different techniques including the clay, a variety of coloured slips, and the option of one of two glazes. Samples, completed projects and inspirational examples will be available to look at as you decide on your own approach, but feel free to bring pictures in of any ideas you want to try!

About the Space and Accessibility

The Classroom has ramp access and is located within a community garden space. While we maintain the paths, there are uneven and slippery surfaces throughout, so please take care on arrival and exiting. The Outdoor Clay Workshop does not have level access, but we can complete the entire workshop in the Classroom area if needed. There are two toilets onsite, with one being accessible. Please email the team when you book if you have specific accessibility needs.

About Nadire

Nadire Gökmen is a London based artist currently working predominantly in ceramics. Her process led practice is motivated by the material traces that appear in our man-made environment. She began working with Global Generation in the early summer of 2021 and is now our Community Maker, leading the co-creation of our ever-developing spaces with a range of youth and community groups from the local area. When not in the Garden, she can be found collecting rusty objects, admiring old bricks, or making something in clay.
