Cambridge Students Union Lounge, University Centre, Granta Pl, CB2 1RU
Description
Share experiences of challenging racism within the University and embedding anti-racist practice. With panels on support and allyship, antiracist research practice, understanding discrimination and healing our mental health after discrimination.
11:00–12:00 – Round-table discussion with Cambridge’s Racial & Religious Discrimination Adviser Manraj Chahal and Elleni Eshete on the theme of Allyship, Community & the Self
This panel will explore how to define and embody the roles of friend, ally, and comrade in the anti-racism struggle, and looking at strategies to protect personal safety and wellbeing whilst doing so. Discussing practical ways for those who see the struggle and want to join in but would like more understanding about how. The session will also delve into the importance of community building over clique building and highlight the differences between these forms of social connection.
12:45–13:45 – Understanding and Processing Discrimination from a Nervous System Perspective.
This workshop focuses on understanding discrimination from a somatic point of view. By exploring not just thoughts but physiological processes in the nervous system, we can understand the impact and causes of discrimination in a more nuanced way. Participants will learn techniques to understand, process, and manage the physiological responses triggered by discriminatory experiences but also have a safe space to explore and build tolerance for demographic and cultural change, as well as when encountering the Other.
14:00–15:00 – Self-Care during Antiracism Research with Dr. Jeff Miley and Elleni Eshete
In this panel, Dr. Jeff Miley and SU Welfare Officer Elleni will discuss self-care strategies tailored for those engaged in anti racism and other EDI related research, offering insights into maintaining personal well-being and resilience while navigating challenging topics at work.
This event is part of the Cambridge Week Against Racism.
