Fiona Reynolds: What Future for Our Rural Churches?

We are delighted to welcome Fiona Reynolds for a thought-provoking talk exploring the future of our rural churches.

Fiona will compare the movements to ‘save’ country houses and to ‘save’ country churches, looking back to two significant exhibitions at the V&A around fifty years ago: The Destruction of the Country House in 1974 and Change and Decay – the future of our churches in 1977.

While country houses were largely ‘saved’, Fiona argues that churches were not and that they have been left behind in the nation’s consciousness.

With many beautiful rural churches now facing declining congregations and uncertain futures, Fiona will explore why this needs to change and consider possible remedies and solutions that could help our churches find long-term sustainability.

The talk will also be an opportunity for discussion, with Fiona welcoming ideas and contributions from the audience. 

What can we do to ensure our rural churches continue to thrive and serve their communities in the years ahead?
