2-Day Bodice and Sleeve Block Pattern Cutting Course

This intensive two-day course introduces the fundamentals of pattern cutting through the creation of a basic bodice block and sleeve block. Suitable for beginners as well as those wishing to refresh their skills, the course covers accurate body measurements, pattern drafting techniques, and the principles of garment fit.

Over the two days, you will learn how to draft a fitted bodice block and a basic sleeve block to your own measurements, understand pattern terminology, and gain confidence in using professional pattern cutting tools. By the end of the course, you will have a completed set of personalised blocks that can be used as the foundation for creating a wide range of garment designs.

• Taking accurate body measurements
• Drafting a basic bodice block
• Drafting a basic sleeve block
• Understanding balance, ease and fit
• Pattern cutting tools and techniques
• Checking and correcting patterns
• Guidance on how to use your blocks for future designs
• Making a perfect fitting toile - full bodice and one sleeve

No previous pattern cutting experience is required.

You will need:

• 1m of wide calico or an old sheet to make your toile
• A Patternmaster or dressmakers square with a curved edge. Although authentic Patternmasters are expensive a suitable alternative can be purchased for £7 on Amazon here

About the tutor:
Kathleen McKee is an experienced costume maker and pattern cutter with over twenty years’ professional practice in London. Her work spans theatre, film, and television, including projects for major institutions such as the Royal Opera House.
Alongside her industry work, Kathleen has spent much of her career teaching in higher education, sharing her extensive technical knowledge with emerging designers and makers.
Kathleen currently works at Butterwalk in Totnes, where she makes sustainable clothing with a focus on quality, longevity, and responsible production. She is passionate about passing on practical skills and supporting thoughtful, mindful making.
Kathleen is delighted to be offering a selection of workshops at Go Deer, providing students with the opportunity to learn professional techniques in a friendly and supportive environment.
