Specialising in ambient folk and combining electronic and classical influences, Mezanmi released his debut album, Always Upwards, in November 2024. O’Hanlon has always been known for his deeply personal songwriting; he draws on his own experiences and reflections as a palliative care doctor and a fascination with the strains of our society’s increasingly precarious relationship with the world around us.
The album was co-produced with double Grammy Award-winning mixer and engineer, Guy Massey (Spiritualized, Kylie Minogue, Richard Hawley, Turin Brakes) and features guests including Sandrayati, Kieran Brunt and Academy Award and Mercury-nominated actor and musician, Jessie Buckley. This was followed by the driving standalone single, This Time Yesterday, released in August 2025 and I Stood For A Moment - laying down version, a re-imagined ambient version of the song, released as part of the EMMI AID compilation in support of Berlin’s Emmaus Forest, in October 2025. O’Hanlon was one of the winners of the 2020 Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition and has previously independently released two critically acclaimed albums under the name AJIMAL. His albums As It Grows Dark/Light (2020) and Childhood (2015) have amassed over five million streams, with national press and radio support (including BBC 6Music, Radio X, The Times) and high-profile syncs in Film and TV, including the opening credits of Mae Martin’s hit Netflix series ‘Feel Good.’
He has toured and performed extensively in the UK and Europe, including live dates supporting Van Morrison, Bernard Butler & Jessie Buckley, Eydís Evensen, Loney Dear, Sandrayati, The 1975, James Vincent McMorrow and Lucy Rose.
In addition to his releases as Mezanmi, Fran O’Hanlon composed the original score for the short film ‘We/Us’, which premiered at the HollyShorts Film Festival in Hollywood and won Top Featurette at San Francisco’s Another Hole in the Head Festival. ‘Mezanmi’ is a Haitian Creole word, which is used as an expression of surprise, shock or joy.
