At the heart of the programme is Schubert’s extraordinary late masterpiece, Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (The Shepherd on the Rock), D.965 — one of the most beautiful works ever written for soprano, clarinet and piano, moving from lonely yearning through tenderness to an exhilarating, joyful close.

Around it, the programme travels from Spain to France, Scandinavia and home: Obradors’ vivid Spanish songs; Falla’s Nana, Asturiana and Canción; Mompou’s haunting Pájaro triste; Fauré’s great Élégie; Delius’s atmospheric Norwegian songs; and Britten’s much-loved folksong arrangements, including O Waly Waly and Down by the Salley Gardens, finishing with the sparkling Tell Me the Truth About Love.
