Alexandra Hall Hall resigned from her post as Brexit counsellor at the UK Embassy in Washington on December 6th 2019, three days before the UK general election, declaring in a devastating critique of the UK government her unwillingness to “peddle half-truths on behalf of a government I do not trust”. Her action established Alex as a valued public truth-teller of the Brexit era. Afterwards she wrote in her profile on twitter: “Writer @bylinetimes Free to speak at last.”
Since then Alex has several times talked to pro-European groups and forums, including Grassroots for Europe’s round tables and webinar (3 times). She is a Patron of the European Movement UK.
Now in this webinar we are talking to Alex about the state and future of government and democracy in the USA, where she lives and is now a citizen. Alex has a longstanding inside view of US politics, having been seconded by the Foreign Office to serve as an expert in US government during the early millennium. In a recent comment for Byline Times she writes:
”No-one should feel complacent about what is happening in America right now. The constitutional crisis which many of us feared might happen under a second Trump Presidency is approaching, far faster than most of us had anticipated, and with almost no effective pushback from America’s political classes, who are either divided among themselves, or actively complicit....”
Alex was UK Ambassador in Georgia from 2016 to 2019. Her article cites a warning to Americans from a Georgian commentator that their democracy is more fragile than they think.
Does the 5-million strong ‘No Kings’ protest on June 14th show that ordinary Americans have woken up to this threat? How can Trump’s monarchical takeover be stopped? Can democrats outside the US, including Europeans and pro-Europeans, help Americans to stop him.... before he comes for us?
