Professor Christina Pagel [UCL], previously known to the public as a prominent contributor to Independent SAGE, the scientific committee which intervened powerfully over scientific and policy issues during the COVID pandemic, initiated in February a project to catalogue and characterise “the actions, statements, and plans of President Donald Trump and his administration that may pose a threat to American democracy, since the start of his second term in January 2025”.

As she reported in a recent overview on August 21st, the total of such recorded acts had by then passed 1000, with their pace accelerating. They are being classified under five major “domains of authoritarianism”:

  • Undermining Democratic Institutions & Rule of Law; Dismantling federal government

  • Suppressing Dissent & Controlling Information

  • Dismantling Social Protections & Rights; Enrichment & Corruption

  • Attacking Science, Environment, Health, Arts & Education

  • Aggressive Foreign Policy & Global Destabilisation; Nationalism

An early instalment of the database included a field documenting, for each Trump action, “Any organised actions against? (individuals speaking out against does not count)”. After the first few weeks, just over half the recorded actions had a recorded counter-action.

Following on from recent briefings by Alex Hall Hall and Richard Corbett, Professor Pagel has accepted the invitation of the Grassroots for Europe Round Table to brief us in an open webinar session on the Trump presidency and its impact in America, Europe and beyond.

We hope to ask her about our current state of knowledge of Trump, about her cumulative and emerging findings, about resistances to Trump, about his regime's ideological and material drivers, about the scale, extent and success to date of his assault on US democracy, about his threat to democracy and human wellbeing, health and flourishing globally, and current best thinking and practice on how to resist.... and many other things.

We're delighted that our speaker Professor Christina Pagel will be joined on Tuesday (September 9th) by Dr Mike Galswothy, Chair of European Movement UK, who will comment on the response of pro-Europeans and democrats to the current right-wing offensive in its various national guises.

The webinar is online on Tuesday September 9th from 5 pm to 6:30pm UK time. Names of other contributors will be released when confirmed.
