Is a better migration system possible?
2025 was not a
great year for migration politics, in UK, EU or USA, with threats or
promises of mass deportation, state violence and civil war. Too
often, the quest for refuge ends in death. Previously moderate
politicians hurry to copy the dehumanising language and cruel
promises of xenophobes.
Can we remain human? Is there a
better politics of migration and asylum?
While in the USA urban populations defy the armed assault of the Trumpian state, in UK and EU, while Starmer and Van der Leyen quest for offshore holding pens, progressive campaigners argue compellingly that morally sentient migration policies make better sense for all.
In this session we will hear from Zoe Gardner [Another Europe is Possible], author of the acclaimed recent report Time For Change: The evidence-based policies that can actually fix the immigration system, and from the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament on their recent statement Fighting for a humane EU Migration Pact.
And we ask whether UK and EU are capable of converging towards migration policies which are progressive rather than regressive.
