This roundtable discussion will bring together Greater Manchester Mayors and Cabinet Members, educators, academics, MPs and think tanks with peace education and advocacy practitioners to look at the role of education, especially in schools, in a time of increasing nuclear tension and public concern.
The event will see the Greater Manchester launch of a new report into nuclear disarmament education in secondary schools in England commissioned by the Nuclear Education Trust. It will also highlight the findings of recent independent polling which found that as anxiety about the possible use of nuclear weapons has increased, the public wishes to see more information, education and debate on the subject.
The roundtable will ask what would be the benefits of more information, education and debate about diplomacy and nuclear disarmament at a time when nuclear threats in the Middle East are escalating and Joe Biden has warned that the nuclear threat is at its highest since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. It will also ask how in these circumstances it is best to develop and deliver nuclear education.
