Unconscious Bias

Wed 14 May 2025 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM BST Online, Microsoft Teams

About this course

We all like to think we are objective and impartial, but the truth is that every one of us holds unconscious biases. These biases are shaped by our personal experiences, what we were taught growing up, and the messages we absorb from the news and social media.

Our brains rely on shortcuts that help us make quick decisions, but these can also lead us to overlook important information, make assumptions, and take inappropriate actions.

Bias influences many aspects of our personal and professional lives. In ASB casework, it can lead to making quick judgments, disproportionate responses, or missed opportunities to intervene and protect victims.

This training course explores common biases and their impact on ASB case management. It encourages self-reflection to help identify where bias may exist in decision-making and highlights practical steps to minimise its influence.

Specifically, learners will explore:

1. What is bias?

2. Anchoring bias and its impact on ASB casework

3. Confirmation bias and its impact on ASB casework

4. How we can identify bias and deploy techniques to reduce the influence it has over our decision-making.

Who is it delivered by

This course is delivered by Katy Anderson, a highly experienced qualified trainer and ASB practitioner.

What Previous Attendees Say:

"A very interactive training session delivered by Green and Burton, to a variety of neighbourhood and communities colleagues dealing with the issue of “bias” when investigating cases based on nuisance and anti-social behaviour.

Debating what bias is, what gets in the way and the impact bias can have. This course highlighted the different types of bias that can be encountered, recognising that personal influences and/or preconceived ideas can shape attitudes and behaviours that can then have a detrimental impact during the investigation process.

Colleagues that attended fed back that this session was well delivered and insightful" - Donna Scott - Bromford Housing
