Dr Alime Büyük, PT, PhD
Specialist Female Pelvic Health Physiotherapist

Gerard Greene, MSc Physio
Specialist Male Pelvic Health Physiotherapist

Who is this course for?

If you are a pelvic health physiotherapist who is already using ultrasound, wants to refresh your skills, or is ready to take your ultrasound practice to the next level, this practical two-day course has been designed for you.

The course brings together both female and male pelvic health ultrasound, with a strong emphasis on hands-on scanning, clinical reasoning and applying ultrasound findings to real-life pelvic health practice.

It will explore key questions including:

How can I develop my transperineal ultrasound scanning skills in female pelvic health?

How do I confidently identify and interpret pelvic floor structures in both women and men?

How can I use ultrasound to support rehabilitation for pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, prolapse and sexual dysfunction?

How do I apply transabdominal and transperineal ultrasound before and after prostatectomy?

How can transabdominal ultrasound be used in the assessment of postnatal rectus diastasis?

How can ultrasound be incorporated into pelvic floor rehabilitation and used as visual biofeedback for patients?

This course bridges research with real-world clinical practice.

Our aim is for you to leave with improved scanning skills, greater clinical confidence and practical strategies that you can begin applying immediately within your own clinical setting.

What makes this course different?

You will learn both transperineal and transabdominal ultrasound techniques across female and male pelvic health.

The course is:

  • Highly practical and hands-on
  • Case-based and embedded within clinical reasoning
  • Relevant to both female and male pelvic health clinicians
  • Designed to build scanning confidence rather than simply teach theory
  • Focused on ultrasound as a clinical tool for assessment, rehabilitation and patient education
  • Suitable for clinicians looking to build, refresh or advance their ultrasound skills

This course is proudly taught by #tutorswhotreat — clinicians who remain embedded in real-world care and are passionate about helping you transform your clinical practice.

What You’ll Learn

Core Topics

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction: hypertonic and hypotonic presentations in both women and men
  • Pelvic floor anatomy and function through ultrasound imaging
  • Pathophysiology and pain science in chronic pelvic pain syndromes
  • Using transperineal ultrasound to assess pelvic floor muscles at rest, during contraction and during dynamic tasks
  • Transabdominal ultrasound scanning
  • Imaging the male pelvic floor before and after prostatectomy
  • Ultrasound within post-prostatectomy rehabilitation
  • Ultrasound applications in constipation, urinary incontinence and dyspareunia
  • Using ultrasound as visual biofeedback during pelvic floor rehabilitation
  • Clinical reasoning and interpretation of ultrasound findings

Hands-On Ultrasound Training

A major focus of the two days will be practical scanning.

You will practise:

Transperineal Ultrasound

  • Ultrasound setup and image optimisation
  • Probe positioning
  • Identifying key pelvic floor structures
  • Assessing resting pelvic floor position
  • Assessing voluntary pelvic floor contraction
  • Dynamic pelvic floor assessment

Female Pelvic Floor Compartments

Anterior Compartment

  • Urethra
  • Bladder
  • Bladder neck

Central Compartment

  • Vagina
  • Vaginal vault
  • Uterus

Posterior Compartment

  • Rectal ampulla
  • Anal canal
  • Anal sphincter

Transabdominal Ultrasound

  • Bladder assessment
  • Post-void residual assessment
  • Abdominal wall assessment
  • Pelvic floor activation through the abdominal window
  • Rectus diastasis assessment
  • Dynamic testing

Male Pelvic Health Ultrasound

  • Male transperineal ultrasound techniques
  • Male transabdominal scanning
  • Pelvic floor assessment before prostatectomy
  • Post-prostatectomy pelvic floor rehabilitation
  • Using ultrasound to support continence rehabilitation
  • Visual biofeedback and motor retraining

Key Clinical Applications

During the course we will explore how ultrasound findings can be incorporated into the assessment and management of conditions including:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Dyspareunia
  • Constipation
  • Pelvic floor overactivity
  • Pelvic floor weakness
  • Post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence
  • Male pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Rectus diastasis

Clinical measurements and observations will include areas such as:

  • Bladder neck descent
  • Post-void residual volume
  • Levator plate angle
  • Pelvic floor movement during contraction
  • Pelvic floor relaxation
  • Dynamic pelvic floor behaviour

We will also explore the use of ultrasound within pessary fitting and pelvic organ prolapse management.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Confidently identify and assess key pelvic floor structures using transperineal and transabdominal ultrasound.
  2. Assess pelvic floor movement at rest, during contraction and during dynamic activities.
  3. Identify and interpret common ultrasound findings within the context of pelvic health physiotherapy.
  4. Use ultrasound findings to support rehabilitation planning for urinary incontinence, prolapse, pelvic pain and post-prostatectomy rehabilitation.
  5. Use ultrasound as visual biofeedback to improve patient understanding and pelvic floor muscle training.
  6. Apply ultrasound principles across both female and male pelvic health presentations.
  7. Integrate ultrasound findings into clinical reasoning rather than using imaging in isolation.

Dr Alime Büyük, PT, PhD

Dr Alime Büyük is an internationally recognised pelvic health physiotherapist, academic and educator with specialist expertise in chronic pelvic pain and pelvic floor ultrasound imaging.

Her PhD research included work at Sherbrooke University’s Labo-Morin Urogynecology Laboratory and focused on pelvic floor imaging in women with pelvic pain syndromes using transperineal ultrasound.

Alime has presented and taught internationally across the UK, USA, Germany, Turkey, Jordan and Canada.

She serves on the Advisory Board of the International Pelvic Pain Society and in 2021 was awarded the prestigious Dr Fred Howard Early Investigator Award.
