Hiking Over 60 is a friendly, confidence-building beginner course designed for adults 60 and older who want to enjoy the outdoors safely and comfortably. The course starts with the basics, guiding you through choosing age-appropriate trails, what to wear in different conditions, and packing light while still bringing what you truly need. You will be introduced to essential gear such as footwear, trekking poles, and daypacks, as well as simple safety items, with plenty of time for questions. Because your body’s needs change as you age, a major focus of the course is learning techniques that are kind to your joints and supportive of your balance. You will learn joint-friendly walking techniques and how to handle hills and uneven ground at a pace that suits you.

In addition to physical techniques, you will learn how to read simple trail maps and signs, check weather and trail conditions before you go, and use basic navigation strategies, including what to do if you feel unsure about where you are. Hydration and nutrition are also key topics, with practical advice so you can stay energized and comfortable on the trail. The course introduces hiking etiquette and Leave No Trace principles, helping you enjoy nature respectfully and sustainably.

Hiking Over 60 is also a social experience where you can meet others with similar interests, share experiences, and encourage each other. By the end of the course, you will be able to plan day hikes with confidence and choose gear and clothing that suit your needs. This course is ideal for adults aged 60 and older who are new to hiking or returning after a long break and want a safe, encouraging way to get started.
