Hiking the Long Trail Side-to-Side

The Green Mountain Club certifies two hiking accomplishments: a complete Long Trail End-to-End section or thru-hike, and a lesser-known achievement known as the Long Trail Side-to-Side. The Side-to-Side consists of hiking all 88 trails (166 miles) that lead to the Long Trail from the east and west, spanning the entire Long Trail from north to south. Suitable for all ages, hiking the Side-to-Side can be completed through day hikes, backpacking trips, or any combination of the two! Whether you’re an experienced End-to-Ender or a novice hiker, taking on the Side-to-Side challenge is a great way to experience the Long Trail system.

Join author, mountain guide, and GMC board member Philip Werner as he shares his highlights of the Side-to-Side Trail list and discusses different strategies for completing it. Philip is the author of the hiking website SectionHiker.com and the book “Hiking Over 60: A Modern Guide to Hiking Gear and Techniques for Active Adults."

The Green Mountain Club strives to provide free programming and workshops for all. If you are able, please consider an optional donation at registration to support broad access to hiker resources and education.
