Backpacking Skills Workshop: Technical Gear and First Aid Kits
Backpacking Skills Workshop: Technical Gear and First Aid Kits
Share this event
Not sure where to start with clothes, hygiene, and other technical gear on the trail? During this workshop we will cover what to look for in clothing and shoes: weight, material, packability, weather proof, and temperature rating. We'll also share examples of specific clothing pieces commonly used. On the technical gear side, we will briefly discuss what may be supportive on trail like gaiters, trekking poles, stuff sacks, and backpacks. We will also cover general hygiene like how to keep “clean” on trail, bathroom kits, pee cloths, and menstruation kits. Gear is expensive and can be hard and overwhelming to source! We will share resources for local gear acquisition as well as what to look for when purchasing and buying second hand. Folks are encouraged to bring their own clothing and technical gear as there will be opportunity for community discussion/sharing your favorite gear!
In addition to Outfitting and Technical gear, we'll also discuss first aid kits. We will go over what key elements should be in a well-stocked kit whether making your own or purchasing one already put together. For overnight trips and extended hikes you will need more supplies than a day hike. We will start by going over/identifying risks and concerns that are commonly managed on trail. Note that this is not first aid training workshop. We are just discussing what a first aid kit should contain.
