Optional workday on Sunday, June 18th - Clearing ridgeline blowdowns with crosscut saws (Strenuous)
We'll be doing a full-service workday on the high elevation section of Long Trail over the Sterling ridgeline. We'll clear and reshape drainages and do any necessary corridor cutting, but the star of the show will be using two-person crosscut saws to clear blowdowns, including a giant birch that fell in 2022 near the Whiteface summit. If you’ve got experience using a crosscut saw, great! If not, we’ll teach you!
We'll hike in via the Beaver Meadow and Whiteface Trails, then work our way along the Long Trail over the Whiteface summit. The hike in is about three miles with 1500 feet of elevation gain, followed by about a mile of trailwork (and then, obviously, hiking those three miles back downhill!). The work itself is active but fun, and we'll provide snacks at the start of the trip and drinks at the end.
Contact Kevin Hudnell at SterlingSection@greenmountainclub.org with any questions, or to register and confirm participation.
We can't wait to see you at GMC's Annual Meeting!
