Back before medicine was separated from magic, physical healing was often accompanied by ritual and prayer.
Working with Andrew Bates and Linda Richardson of Hazelsong Theatre, you will examine the contents of the ancient manuscript known as the ‘Nine Herbs Charm’ and consider both the pagan and the Christian approaches to herbs and healing in early medieval societies. Visit Jarrow Hall’s herb garden and then create a herbal salve following the Nine Herbs Charm as the Anglo Saxons would have done, using plant lore, charms and rituals. You will also be able to create a cast-metal amulet to take away with you, along with a jar of the salve and a pamphlet containing a version of the Nine Herbs Charm.
