Secrets of the Guitar

This course is designed for all beginner to intermediate guitarists who wish to expand their fretboard knowledge, explore ear training, and expand songwriting and improvising ability on the guitar. Each module builds off the last, but can also be taken independently. Take-home materials will be provided.

Sunday October 4. Module 1: The CAGED System: Beyond Scales. Learn how to use the CAGED system to see arpeggios and chords. This framework connects the fretboard from one position to the next, enabling quicker and simpler visualization. Printed materials provided.

Sunday October 11. Module 2: Applying Voice Leading. Learn how to connect chords to one another to make a smoother (or more dissonant) sound. We will explore diads, triads, and chord inversions. Printed exercises provided.

Sunday October 18. Module 3: Exploring 7th Chords. Learn major 7, minor 7, dominant 7, suspended 7, and augmented 7 voicings in multiple positions. We will also cover application of these chords in the context of covering songs and writing music. Printed materials and exercises provided.

Sunday October 25. Module 4: Chord Melodies: A Whole Song In Two Hands. Learn how to put melody, harmony, rhythm, and bass all in one arrangement on the guitar. Printed tabs of complete song arrangements provided.
