Arnolda Dufour Bowes is an emerging playwright and creative artist who published two books, one winning a few awards: 20.12m A Short Story Collection of a Life Lived as a Road Allowance Metis, which her play is inspired by. Her short story "Apples and Traintracks" is a fictionalized account of her kokum and dad's experience in 1946 when the Saskatchewan government imposed Metis Rehabilitation Farms and forcibly removed families from the Road Allowance to Green Lake. Although this play is based upon events in 1946 and young Charlie's experiences, it focuses on the consequences of adult Charlie's life and his memories of those devastating events that occurred on the Road Allowance to him and his mama, Bella.
This play examines the repercussions of government-imposed systems, the loss of family, community and a way of life. Charlie, a now mid-thirties man, finds himself at a crossroads in his life with his spouse, work, and purpose. Through pivotal birth and death moments, reoccurring flashbacks to his childhood, & the help of a mystical, seemingly homeless woman, Charlie struggles to find what he's been chasing or running from all these years.
This story examines the complicated difficulties and personal conflicts Charlie now finds himself in as an adult while coming to terms with his past, his unknown future and the history of the Road Allowance community he lost.
