From Hackney, With Love: An Intimate History of Regeneration, Gentrification and Belonging is an insider exploration of the dramatic social, cultural and economic transformation of one of the most iconic places in Britain – my home, the London Borough of Hackney. My talk will explore the themes of Hackney's socio-economic transformation during the 18th, 19th and 20th century and its transition from a Middle Class suburb to one of the poorest areas of Britain. But it will also examine how since the 1980s Hackney has increasingly returned to its middle class origins - driven by the impact of regeneration, urban renewal and gentrification, exploring its role in displacing working class communities across the Borough since the 2000s
