Description
Extraordinary first-hand stories from behind Hackney’s closed doors. A club for Malaysian ex-seaman in Lower Clapton, a cornershop on a common with a Gujarati back kitchen, a flat hosting after-hours’ blues parties on Brooke Road and a Homerton depot delivering news from Fleet Street. In the past few years, The Hackney and Newham History Social Club has been recording remarkable everyday people in twentieth century Hackney. With tales about working in our factories, making us better, the gossip, the pain, even a love story from a favourite Stoke Newington delicatessen. Join presenter Sue Elliott-Nichols with members of our podcast’s Production Club to celebrate the voices going into Hackney’s Archives, and hear borough history from a unique perspective. Same streets, different lives. Come meet your neighbours. The Hackney and Newham History Social Club is made by Immediate Theatre, with support from The Heritage Fund.
