Shrubland Road runs from Queensbridge Road to London Fields - 100 dwellings. It appears to be a quiet, residential road but it has a history of riots, 2 killed by German bombing in WWI, a hub of illegal gambling and much more.
Also back in the 1890s, our Road became the centre of a campaign to close local pubs. The vicarage of St Mary Church (designed by John Nash) was situated on the site now occupied by Lovell House and the vicar help to set up the Vigilance Committee ‘to procure a diminution of the Licensed houses’.
In 2023, we started investigating these pubs. Although the campaign failed in the 1890s most of the pubs had disappeared by the end of the 20th century.
