Hackney Brook Walk for Car Free Day
In ancient times, the Hackney Brook ran through the heart of Hackney carrying clean and wholesome water down to the River Lea.
The picturesque ford was beloved of artists, with the Parish Church overlooking the river, Indeed It is thought that the name Hackney may derive from the Saxon Hacas ey – a place raised in the marsh. All this changed forever in the 19th century when the Brook was subsumed into the Victorian sewage system.
The Hackney Society will lead a short walk starting at our stall on Amhurst Road tracing the course of the Brook and recalling its place in the landscape. The walk will finish at Sutton House where the Tudor courtier, Sir Ralph Sadleir, built his mansion and garden in a site where he could enjoy the beautiful vista over the Brook.
